Our mission is to promote Oughterard as the vibrant, welcoming Gateway to Connemara - celebrating our rich heritage, natural beauty, and community spirit. We strive to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike by supporting sustainable tourism, and preserving our cultural and environmental treasures. Our goal is to make positive tangible changes, while fostering economic and social vitality through collaboration and innovation, showcasing the pride in our town's unique identity. In addition we are proud supporters of the UNESCO Joyce Country & Western Lakes Geopark project.
Tourism is one of our main aims and besides that of Connemara, the UNESCO status of the Geopark offers us a framework to develop new tourism opportunities, heritage links and adventure sports, including a platform of accommodation providers. The fact that Lough Corrib is at the centre of the Geopark gives us a unique opportunity to reinvigorate the location of Oughterard, not only as The Gateway to Connemara but also as a key gateway to Lough Corrib, a destination of international importance within the Joyce Country and Western Lakes Geopark.
